Does a more complex prototype structure make processing more difficult?

The structure of a prototype does have a significant impact on processing difficulty. However, it's not just the complexity of the structure that increases processing difficulty. The specific factors that contribute to increased processing difficulty include the following aspects:

Requirements for processing precision and surface finish: The higher the requirements for precision and surface finish, the higher the cost. For example, when precision requirements reach a tolerance of ±0.02mm, the investment in equipment, skilled technicians, and other resources will be considerably higher.

Choice of processing technology: Technology refers to the processing method. Different methods—such as CNC machining, 3D printing, vacuum casting, etc.—come with different costs and require different technical expertise.

Material selection: If the part is made of difficult-to-machine materials, such as stainless steel, the material hardness is high, tool wear is significant, and advanced CNC equipment is often required. As a result, the cost is higher and the processing is more challenging compared to using standard materials.

Surface finishing processes: Appearance requirements for the part vary. In some cases, simple surface treatment such as sanding, polishing, or deburring may suffice. However, when a more realistic product finish is required, specialized processes such as painting, electroplating, anodizing, laser engraving, and others are needed. The more processes required, the higher the cost.

Design changes or repairs: If design drawing modifications or repairs are required during processing, this may result in additional costs and increased processing difficulty.

Tool wear: The cutting tools used in machining are typically made of tungsten steel. After several uses, these tools experience wear, which introduces dimensional errors and affects processing accuracy.

Whether split-part machining is required: If the prototype is highly complex, it may need to be split into separate parts for machining. While split-part machining is more cost-effective, it results in lower structural integrity and load-bearing capacity compared to one-piece machining.

In summary, the difficulty of prototype processing is primarily reflected in requirements for precision, material selection, processing methods, surface finishing, design changes, tool wear, and the structural integrity of split-part machining. All these factors affect both the cost and quality of prototype production, and they also increase processing difficulty. If your product presents such challenging processing requirements, our experienced structural engineers at Shanghai New Product Technologies Co., Ltd. are ready to work with you to find the right solutions.
